Swollen shut sore throat, can't drink water... what to do?

My husband has a sore throat and its swollen shut becasue of his tonsils. He went to the doctor yesterday and got some meds but now he cant swallow them without choking. He can't even swallow water without choking... what can he do? He tried gargling salt water to kill some of the bacteria... we just don't know what else to do.
