95 firebird 3.4 won't run keeps backfiring when trying to start it. please help?

I have a 95 firebird it has the 3.4 v6 it will crank but it backfires when trying to start I checked the fuel pump it is good I had someone check the timiing chain he said it was good (don't know how right he is thou) any ideas on what it could be?
