What could be wrong with 1997 gmc jimmy?

We were driving today windshield wipers quit so we pulled over to get them working again husband tapped on windshield wiper motor to try to get them going again and vehical died tried to restart vehical and it started but spit and sputtered like no fuel Then died and would not restart. Fuel pump was put on new 7-8 months ago and new filters as well does anyone know what it might be?
