What Does Black Obsidian Mean?

My parents went to New Orleans in Louisiana a while ago and brought me back this small hand carved Panda made out of Black Obsidian. They said they got it at one of those mystical shops that have fortune tellers in the back and things that give you good luck inside. Well they told me that each rock on display meant something and was supposed to bring good luck, or love, or fortune. They don't believe in that stuff, so they didn't tell me what Black Obsidian meant. I am very superstitious, so I was wondering if anyone knew what it meant? The panda was hand carved in China.
